Reading at KS5

Reading at KS5
At Key Stage 5, reading remains a vital part of academic and personal development. Whether students are studying A Levels, BTECs, or a combination of qualifications, regular and purposeful reading can significantly enhance their learning, critical thinking, and overall achievement.
Why Reading Matters
Active reading at KS5 is essential. It helps students:
- Deepen subject knowledge and broaden understanding
Build vocabulary and improve writing quality
Strengthen analytical and evaluative skills
Prepare for assessments and coursework
Develop independent thought and curiosity
Enhance university and career readiness
Engaging with both academic texts and wider reading also supports students in making connections across their subjects and in real-world contexts.
Reading During Form Time
To embed reading into the daily routine, all KS5 students are expected to bring reading material with them to morning form time. This will include directed time to read quietly, offering a valuable opportunity to immerse themselves in both academic and leisure reading before the day begins.
Students should ensure they have a book or relevant reading material with them each day.
Reading Lists and Super Curricular Resources
The school has developed dedicated reading lists for every subject area at KS5, which include:
- Core academic texts to support course content
Reading for pleasure to encourage a lifelong love of books
Super curricular reads – recommended for students who wish to explore their subjects beyond the curriculum, perfect for university applications and interviews
These resources are designed to stretch and inspire students, helping them stand out in a competitive academic environment.
