Knowledge and Skills

Students will develop: 

• Substantive psychological knowledge, including psychological approaches, research methods, and contemporary debates. 

• Scientific and statistical literacy, enabling them to design investigations, analyse data, and evaluate research validity. 

• Critical and evaluative thinking, applying psychological theories to real-life contexts and making informed, balanced judgments. 

• Written and verbal communication skills, through structured essays and oral discussion of psychological concepts. 

Inclusivity and Accessibility

Our curriculum is inclusive by design: diverse studies and cultural contexts are embedded throughout, ensuring students see themselves and others reflected in what they learn. Teaching is adapted to support all learners, with scaffolded materials, retrieval practice, visual supports, and modelling all form part of our regular classroom practice. We celebrate neurodiversity and mental health awareness, promoting both academic achievement and emotional literacy. 

Real-World Application

Psychology equips students with transferable skills highly sought after in education, healthcare, law, business, and public services. Students explore real-world scenarios, from eyewitness testimony to mental health treatment, understanding how psychology underpins everyday interactions, social policies, and professional practice. 

Introduction

Psychology is the scientific study of the mind and behaviour. It helps students understand what drives individuals and groups, how memory and learning work, and how biology influences thought and action. At A-Level, Psychology blends scientific methodology with social relevance, making it both challenging and deeply rewarding. 

Key Learning Stages: 

Psychology is introduced formally at Key Stage 5, but cross-curricular links in Science, RE, and PSHE throughout Key Stages 3 and 4 help build the foundational awareness of mental health, memory, and behaviour that support later study. A-Level Psychology is structured over two years with three key papers. 

Progression Pathways: 

The course begins with core approaches and foundational methods, before exploring more specialist content such as schizophrenia, depression and aggression. As students progress, they move from description and understanding toward high-level evaluation and application. This structured development prepares students for degree-level study and psychological, scientific, educational law enforcement or health-related careers. 

• In-depth study of topics such as multiculturalism, political life,. 

• Films are studied, e.g. El Laberinto del fauno, La Haine, and literary works such as Crónica de una muerte anunciada and Der Besuch der alten Dame.  

• Emphasis on debate, essay writing, and independent research. 

• Assessment includes speaking (30%), essay writing (20%), listening, reading and translation (50%).

Examinations 
All assessment is external and takes place at the end of Year 13: 

• Paper 1 – 2 hours, 35% of qualification 

• Paper 2 – 2 hours, 35% of qualification 

• Paper 3 – 2 hours, 30% of qualification 

Each paper includes multiple-choice, short-answer, data response, and extended essay questions. 

Formative Assessment 
Students regularly complete: 

• Practice exam questions 

• Timed essays 

• Knowledge retrieval quizzes 

• Statistical application tasks 

• Peer/self-assessment and feedback sessions 

• Practical work 

This approach ensures that students consolidate knowledge, refine their exam technique, and track their progress consistently.

Lessons in Psychology are evidence-informed and student-focused. Core strategies include: 

• Explicit teaching with modelling and scaffolding 

• Interleaved retrieval practice 

• Debate, discussion, and case study analysis 

• Use of mnemonics and memory-enhancing techniques

How much homework is expected? 
At least 1 hour per lesson taught; including reading, revision, or exam practice. 

Do students need to have studied psychology before? 
No, the course is designed to be accessible without prior experience. 

How is support provided for students who are struggling? 
Targeted intervention, extra tutorials, and structured feedback are all part of our support system. 

What are the entry requirements? 
One of the following subjects at Grade 6 and two at Grade 5: GCSE Maths, Science and English are recommended due to the statistical, biological and essay-based demands of the course.
