Our Languages curriculum is designed to ignite curiosity, cultural awareness, and effective communication in a multilingual world. Through the study of Spanish, French, and German, students develop confidence in the receptive skills (listening and reading) and the productive skills (speaking and writing), empowering them to express ideas clearly and connect with diverse communities. 

Knowledge and Skills

Students build a strong foundation in grammar, vocabulary, and phonics. Over time, they learn to manipulate language for different audiences and purposes.

We believe language-learning is for everyone. A carefully structured curriculum which is responsive to latest research and the needs of students, cultural enrichment activities, and personalised support ensure that all, regardless of prior experience or learning needs, can make meaningful progress. 

Real-World Application

Languages enhance employability and provide a competitive edge in careers such as business, law, tourism, translation, teaching, and international relations. Students gain a wider world view, preparing them for higher education and global citizenship. 

Introduction

Languages open doors. At Neston High School, our languages curriculum not only equips students with practical communication skills but also fosters intercultural understanding and cognitive development. 

Key Learning Stages: 

• Key Stage 3 (Years 7–9): All students study Spanish in Year 7. In Years 8 and 9, some students will opt to study French or German in addition to Spanish. Others will focus solely on Spanish. 
  
  Year 7: Spanish is taught for 5 lessons a fortnight
  Year 8: French or German is taught for 3 lessons a fortnight and Spanish is taught for 3 or 4 lessons a fortnight
  Year 9: French or German is taught for 3 lessons a fortnight and Spanish is taught for 3 or 4 lessons a fortnight
   

• Key Stage 4 (GCSE): We offer GCSEs in French, Spanish and German. Students follow the AQA specification. Languages are an option choice, though their study is encouraged and uptake is strong.  

• Key Stage 5 (A-Level): We offer A-level courses in French, German and Spanish. Class sizes generally range from 5 to 15 students, allowing for tailored, discussion-based learning. Students reach a high-level of fluency and many are prepared for university-level study.  

Progression Pathways: Our spiral curriculum revisits and deepens knowledge of key grammar and vocabulary, building from simple phrases to complex structures. Each stage reinforces prior learning, encouraging fluency and cultural competence. 

 

Topic areas: Personal information, family, school life, free time, food and drink, holidays, local area and environment, technology, future plans and careers. 
Students develop basic conversation skills, use of key tenses, extended opinions, and cultural knowledge. Students are exposed to vocabulary which relates closely to the GCSE vocabulary list to avoid excessive cognitive load.  

 

• Themes include People and Lifestyle, Popular Culture and Communication and the World around us. These themes are divided into 9 topics taught through Y10 and Y11.  

• Students build complex grammar knowledge and broaden vocabulary. 

• Cultural elements such as traditions, celebrities, geography and history, as well as current events, are embedded. 

• Assessment: Listening, Speaking, Reading, and Writing – each 25%. 

• In-depth study of topics such as multiculturalism, political life,. 

• Films are studied, e.g. El Laberinto del fauno, La Haine, and literary works such as Crónica de una muerte anunciada and Der Besuch der alten Dame.  

• Emphasis on debate, essay writing, and independent research. 

• Assessment includes speaking (30%), essay writing (20%), listening, reading and translation (50%). 

Key Stage 3: 

• Regular vocabulary and grammar quizzes 

• End-of-unit tests including listening, reading, writing, including prior learning 

• Comprehension tasks in lessons  

Key Stage 4 (GCSE): 

• Final Exam – 25% each in Listening, Speaking, Reading, and Writing 

• Mock exams and internal assessments to track progress 

• End-of-unit tests on grammar, vocabulary and exam skills, including prior learning 

Key Stage 5 (A-Level): 

• Paper 1: Listening, Reading, Translation (50%) 

• Paper 2: Film/Literature Essays (20%) 

• Paper 3: Speaking (30%) 

Teaching Strategies: 
We use interactive, student-focused lessons incorporating vocabulary acquisition and comprehension activities, group tasks, and cultural immersion. Lessons follow a clear structure with modelling, practice, application and regular retrieval. We design many high-quality, in-house resources.

• Texts: AQA Spanish/French/German GCSE and A-Level textbooks 

• Independent Study: Access to listening practice, online dictionaries, and reading materials

• Trips to Spain, France and Germany across all Key Stages

Languages can be studied independently or alongside other subjects (e.g. Law, Business, Politics, Tourism, International Development).

Q: My child hasn’t studied Spanish in primary school. Will they be ok? 
 
A: Yes- the Spanish curriculum is carefully structured in year 7 to ensure rapid progress and confident engagement with the language. If students have studied French or German previously, they can opt to take it up again in year 8.                                                                                                                                                                                             

Q: My child already speaks a foreign language fluently. Can they sit an exam in it?                                                          

A: Yes. We have recently entered native speakers for GCSEs in French, German, Spanish, Russian and Italian.     

                                                                
Q: How can I help my child at home? 

 A: Encourage regular use of vocabulary apps and practising speaking aloud with simple prompts. Making languages part of daily routines, watching a film or series or listening to music in the language can also be extremely effective, as can accessing it via the Internet or social media.
