History
Educational Goals
The Neston High School History curriculum helps to explain the world as it is by exploring the world as it was, in an intriguing and ambitious way. Understanding is built developed around a spine of British History, whilst ensuring that students learn about a range of historical periods, fields, places and societies from across the world. We study a diversity of people and their experiences throughout the past, as well as a broad range of cultures, ideas, beliefs, and values, ensuring that students appreciate both the complexity and the interconnectedness of human societies across time.
Our history curriculum follows a structured approach to build and progress students’ understanding of both substantive and disciplinary knowledge. This structure ensures that students revisit key themes and concepts throughout their time at Neston High School, deepening their understanding through carefully sequenced topics that allow for both consolidation and extension of knowledge. Students are encouraged to make connections between different periods and places, fostering a coherent sense of historical development and change.
We note that students make progress in history by developing their knowledge about the past (‘substantive knowledge’) and their knowledge about how historians investigate the past, and how they construct historical claims, arguments and accounts (‘disciplinary knowledge’). Our enquiries are designed to incrementally build students’ awareness, grasp and mastery of this historical knowledge. Through regular opportunities to engage with primary sources, interpretations, and historical debates, students learn to question evidence, evaluate arguments, and form their own well-supported conclusions about the past.
We teach through enquiry questions to help focus our students’ learning and promote curiosity, critical thinking, and independent investigation. These questions guide each unit of study, encouraging students to explore significant historical issues, consider different perspectives, and develop their ability to construct and communicate historical arguments with clarity and confidence. Wherever possible, our enquiry questions are shaped by current scholarly debates and historical arguments, introducing students to key areas of historiography and helping them understand how interpretations of the past are formed, challenged, and revised over time.
We use stories and narrative to bring the past to life, making complex events and processes accessible and engaging for all learners. By weaving individual stories and broader narratives, we help students to empathise with people from different times, understand cause and consequence, and see the relevance of history to their own lives and the world around them.
History at Neston High School is not just about learning what happened, but about understanding why it matters. By equipping students with the tools to interrogate the past, we empower them to navigate the complexities of the present and shape the future with wisdom and empathy. In exploring the echoes of history, our students do not simply study stories - they become part of the ongoing conversation about what it means to be human.
