Neston High School Library is recognised by the Society of Authors as a centre of excellence in promoting reading for pleasure.

The library is available to students throughout the school day and after school. Students have library lessons each fortnight with our English team. Students can loan resources, use computers, undertake silent study and receive study support in the library.

The library is managed by our full time librarian Miss Pearson.

Accelerated Reader

Students use Accelerated Reader through the library and in English lessons to support their reading. Accelerated Reader allows students to track their reading and take quizzes on books to earn points, prizes and trophies. Neston High School Library has been recognised as an Accelerated Reader Champion School since 2016.

“Children and young people who use Accelerated Reader tend to enjoy reading more, do it more often and think more positively about reading than their peers who do not use Accelerated Reader. ”-Dr Clark, National Literacy Trust

Patron of Reading

Neston High School's Patron of Reading is local author Jon Mayhew. His work includes the Mortlock series, the Monster  Odyssey series, Death Road and Death Wheels.  Mr Mayhew visits the school each term to work with students on reading for pleasure and creative writing.

Each year the library hosts the Big School Read which encourages all students and staff to read the same book. Lots of different departments consider the book and the author visits our school.

Our annual Spelling Bee is hosted in the Autumn term by the library council. Students compete in teams with their classes and individually to find the champion class and student of our new year seven intake.  Our current Spelling Bee Champion is Jack Stokes.

The Reading Millionaires Conference is held each July for those students who have reached an incredible million words on Accelerated Reader. Students gather with Miss Pearson to network with other millionaires, discuss reading and set targets.

Carnegie Awards Shadowing is held in the library with book club from March to June.

Our Creative Writing Prize is awarded each December.
