Year 11 Attend Poetry Live Event

GCSE Poetry Live!

On Monday 26th February, one hundred Year 11 students headed off to the GCSE Poetry Live event that was taking place in Manchester’s Opera House theatre.

As part of the GCSE English Literature course, students are expected to study fifteen poems from a range of poets. During the event, the students were able to see and hear some of these poets perform their poetry live as well as being able to hear insightful anecdotes about what inspired them to write their impressive works of art. As well as hearing first-hand accounts from the poets, students also had the opportunity to listen to advice from one of AQA’s chief examiners who gave an insight into how to gain higher marks in the exam.

Students thoroughly enjoyed being able to see the poets that they have been studying for two years, which included Carol Ann Duffy, Simon Armitage and Imtiaz Dhaker, live on stage. However, it was the appearance of John Agard at the end of the event that students were most excited by. When he appeared on stage, 1800 students from over twenty schools were clapping and chanting his name, proving that poets and poetry are able to capture that imagination of students.

The trip was a huge success and with fewer than ten school weeks to go until their GCSE English Literature exams, it served as a wonderful revision aid for all students.
