Community Trustee – (Voluntary)

Community Trustee – (Voluntary)

Neston High School stands at the centre of a diverse community. It is surrounded by several universities and institutions of academic excellence, by prestigious industrial and commercial enterprises, by legal and administrative centres and by a small historic town. The University of Liverpool has two departments situated in our area and the school has established close relations with them.

The school has an active Board of Trustees consisting of 14 Trustees comprising of community, parent and staff trustees. The Board of Trustees have a diverse and wide range of experience and backgrounds.  They are united in their determination that the school shall excel in all areas; encompassing the principles of a comprehensive education - that the talents of every student, of whatever ability, will be fully developed.

Trustees focus on the three core functions of governance:

  1. Ensuring clarity of vision, ethos and strategic direction; Vision Ethos and Strategic Direction 2020
  2. Holding executive leaders to account for the educational performance of the organisation and its pupils, and the performance management of staff; and
  3. Overseeing the financial performance of the organisation and making sure its money is well spent.

Trustees will be expected to undertake linking roles to priority areas of school provision linked to agreed strategic priorities.

The skills required for governance of the trust are identified explicitly and set out in a skills document within this pack that informs the recruitment and appointment of people to the board for their skills.

Trustees will be expected to:

  • Attend and play an active part in meetings of the full governing body (at least 9 per year).
  • Be prepared to take the lead at relevant task and finish groups set up by the Trustees (3 or 4 meetings per year for each group).
  • Be a member of staff interview panels when requested.
  • Attend school events such as school productions, presentation events, open days and major concerts.
  • Undertake training or other development activity as necessary to continue to develop their skills.
  • Keep up to date with national policy and changes in the education sector.
  • Visit the school and participate in learning walks and subject/theme reviews.

Trustees will be required to sign the Trustee code of practice, and to apply for a DBS enhanced disclosure. Trustees also act both as directors under company law and trustees under charity law and as such must be registered as directors with Companies House.
